Students win four gold medals

KADAPA: Three students of Kadapa Regional Sports School bagged four gold medals in the Eighth National Inter-District Athletics meet held at Haridwar in Uttaranchal from October 27 to 30.


Lauding their achievement when they called on him in his camp office, district Collector Shashi Bhushan Kumar announced a cash prize of Rs.1,000 each to B. Sakunthala and B. Chandrakiran in the under 14 category and M. Indu in under 16 category, at the Collector's camp office here. He announced cash prizes of Rs.500 each to Vaishnavi, Naresh and K. Pavani who stood fourth and fifth. Sakunthala bagged two gold medals in 60 metres sprint and in long jump, Chandrakiran in 60 metres sprint and Indu 5.02 metres running. Sportspersons of Kadapa regional sports school bagged four gold medals while the remaining three regional sports schools in the State bagged six gold medals by competing with sportspersons of 175 districts in 22 States, the Collector said.
He assured to ensure expeditious completion of the ongoing works.

Budgetary allocation
The achievement is noteworthy particularly because the Regional Sports School at Kadapa was granted a budgetary allocation of Rs.28 lakh as against an allocation of Rs.2.40 crore to Andhra Pradesh State Sports School at Hakimpet in Hyderabad, its special officer M. Ramachandra Reddy said. The school students are plagued by non-supply of track suits, shoes, running spikes, balls and other sports material, but excelling in sports events, he added.

Lack of admissions
He lamented lack of admissions for the last two years and feared that the sports school might be closed down if the existing students completed their course and left. Athletics coach K. Srinivas Singh and medal winners participated.
