New literacy programme introduced by Centre

KADAPA: The Union government introduced Sakshar Bharat programme, to be implemented with the involvement of Panchayat Raj setup, as earlier programmes such as Akshara Bharathi and Akshara Rasmi introduced under Total Literacy Mission in the 1980s did not meet with success, District Collector Shashi Bhushan Kumar asserted here on Wednesday.

Sarpanches, mandal presidents, Zilla Parishad Chairperson, district, mandal and village samakhyas should play a key role in the programme,

The Collector said at a district-level training camp on conducting family survey under Sakshar Bharathi Mission 2012. Over three lakh illiterate persons in Kadapa district were envisaged to be made literate in the next five years, he said.

Assistant programme managers of DRDA, mandal and cluster coordinators should strive in a foolproof manner to conduct family survey accurately, the Collector said.
Cent per cent literacy

Zilla Parishad chairperson D. Jyothi Reddy said that cent per cent literacy, particularly among women, would hasten progress and asked educated persons to serve as volunteers.

Deputy Director of Adult Education S. Saibaba said that the programme targeted at making all persons aged above 15 years literate by 2015. It was targeted to make 60,000 illiterate women literates by this year, he said. Mandal coordinators were already imparted training.
